April may be cherry blossom season, but May is all about roses! This means that you only have a few more weekends to catch the stunning variety of roses in full bloom at Chosun University's rose garden. This garden has over 200 kinds of roses and is completely free to the public!
If you live in or around Gwangju, you can easily hop on bus 001 and get off at Chosun Dae (조선대- Chosun University). We stopped by last Saturday as the festival kicked off. The garden was a bit busy with other onlookers, but not overly crowded. It was a bit overcast, but the breezy, clean air was honestly a blessing.

This garden is amazing and I honestly never knew that such a variety of roses existed until I came to this particular festival last year. Roses cluster around the path, up fences, and along walls. Signs display the name and class of each species of rose in both Korean and English. There are also plenty of arches covered with flowers, allowing you to get up close and personal with your favorite colored roses.
